Joseph Bond (1815-1859)
Joseph Bond was the most successful planter and cotton farmer in the state of
Georgia. He was killed in 1859 by a former Plantation overseer he had
fired for mistreating a slave. The Bond monument has suffered
over the years from a tornado in 1954, and from vandals; there were originally
surrounded by four other figures on the lower level. The monument was
sculptured in Italy, and was carved out of Carrara marble.
